Society’s Ignorance

I received an email this morning that really ticked me off. I considered replying to the “mommy blog” that sent it out, but after giving myself time to calm down I decided that the type of ignorance being displayed by the women who write for that blog and by the majority of those who comment on it would lend them to being completely unresponsive to intelligent thought. So here I am voicing my opinion on my blog – after all, that’s what blogs are for.

The email contained two links:

The first link was to an article about how Dr. Andrew Wakefield “faked” his results in his studies of the relationship between Autism and vaccines – most notably the MMR vaccine. “Faked” is not my term – it is theirs. Whether or not you agree that vaccines cause Autism is not the issue here. What ticks me off is that so many people don’t seem to understand that the debate about vaccines in the Autism community is not limited to the MMR – the problem is with the entire vaccine schedule and the ridiculous amounts of toxins and byproducts included in these vaccines. It starts from birth with the Hep B shot and continues on. It isn’t just thimerosal, it is also aluminum, sheep blood cells, monkey cells, chicken embryos, cells from aborted human fetal tissue, formaldehyde, and the list goes on! Don’t believe me, CLICK HERE.

The second link was to an article about the hidden dangers in cosmetics. It discussed things like formaldehyde and other toxins that are in things like your perfume or heck, your foundation! Oh no! Toxic chemicals in your lip stick!!! Seriously! This was on THE SAME BLOG!

So why was I ticked off? Because we live in a society where people are more concerned about what might be in their foundation than what they inject into their children! A society that cares about hormones injected into cattle, but not about poison injected into babies! A society concerned with pesticides on plants, but not caring about cells from aborted human fetal tissue getting injected into their kids! A society that will fight tooth and nail to remove a toxic chemical from a plastic water bottle that you drink from but that stands idly by watching known POISONS go into the bodies of their children. This is the ignorance that surrounds us!

I’m not saying don’t get vaccinated. What I’m saying is stop the hypocrisy and get informed. A commenter on that blog called the vaccine link to Autism a “hoax” – fine, if she wants to feel that way then fine. But don’t then turn around and ask me to care about what may or may not be used in the creation of your toddler’s spoon. Do you get my point here?

How can people care so much about cosmetics and plastic bottles and so little about their kids? I just don’t get it.

Mealtime Challenges

I ran across an interesting article today about mealtime challenges in people with Autism. I am no stranger to this. My son will only eat certain things (and the list is not that long) and he will only eat them at certain times of the day. Trying to get him to have something new usually results in a complete meltdown. There have been a few times where I did manage to get him to try a bite of something new only to watch him gag because he couldn’t handle the texture of a particular food.

Anyways, this article may be one you’d like to read: Mealtime a Challenge for Some with Autism

Live Gluten Freely

Many people say that altering the diets of their Autistic children helps drastically reduce many of the mannerisms (symptoms? characteristics? behaviors?) that they exhibit. For some it is a calming effect, for others there is improvement in speech or motor skills. Whatever the outcome, if altering the diet works for you then I say it’s a good thing.

Sometimes it can be hard to find items that are gluten free. Stores like Whole Foods may have a good selection, but if you don’t live close to a store like that then you may be wondering what to do. Today I found an encouraging answer – one of the most well known brands in America has a pretty full line of gluten free products and this brand is readily available at places very convenient, such a Walmart – isn’t that great!?!

Better Crocker – yes, I said Betty Crocker! While these aren’t exactly entire meal ideas, these products from Betty Crocker are a great supplement for side dishes, snacking, and dessert. Check out the website Live Gluten Freely where you will find a full list of products that are gluten free – most of which you will be able to find at your regular local grocery store.

I just think it’s great that more companies are recognizing that people want more gluten free products!

You can follow Betty Crocker on Twitter @BettyCrocker

*This was not a paid post, I truly find this a great thing and have offered up my opinion on it. There has been NO compensation whatsoever.

Please Welcome Autism Bloggers

Autism Bloggers: Autism Information and Autism Blog Directory: This site is about one woman’s journey through the world of Autism. She blogs about her personal story and in the process shares information about Autism, Autism resources, and provides an extensive listing of people blogging about Autism.

Autism Bloggers is the first to be listed in our Autism section right here on Checkup Today. Since Autism Bloggers is also a community of people working to network with one another, we also have it listed in our “Networks” category.

I will be going down the list of “health related” blogs, sites, and resources that have been part of our health directory and will introduce them to you one at a time. If you have a “health related” blog, site OR resource on the internet and would like to be part of our directory and/or community.. we would love to have you.

I realize many of you have blogs that believe in what we are doing with CheckupToday.com and have chosen to continue to support our efforts by linking back. I appreciate that and will continue to add to our “Supporters” section on the front page. If and when that list becomes longer than the Mississippi River..
