Blog Traffic Doesn’t Fall Out of the Sky
September 24, 2007 |
I’ve had people ask me these questions lately:
1. What’s the benefit of being in a blog network?
2. Why should I network with other bloggers?
3. How come my traffic has not increased since joining?
4. How come nobody leaves a comment on my blog?
5. How come I’m not making any money?
Heather of Girly Blog Designz summed it up PERFECTLY
To be honest, sometimes I get more satisfaction participating on somebody else’s blog and getting to know who they are to the point that I could care less what my blog traffic is doing.
(Well, and I never did like statistics either. Half the time I don’t even know if people are coming OR going on my blogs. I could care less about page views.)
I’ve made some AWESOME friends through blogging and have learned so much about networking by getting involved in some of those online communities that Heather mentioned.
The traffic to your blog doesn’t just fall out of the sky. You have to work at it and make some sort of an effort. Sometimes you have to go above and beyond the four walls of your blog. You have to be committed to what you’re doing and to the people you are wanting to do it with.
The benefit of being part of a blog network is the end result, the camaraderie, the friendship, the sharing of tips, the fun in participating in blog stuff. It’s no fun blogging by myself.
I like to network with other bloggers because every time I do I learn something new. It’s also a chance for me to see what the rest of the world is like and thankfully blogging and networking allow me that opportunity.
I can honestly say I don’t know much about the traffic on my blogs because I really don’t pay that much attention to it. Oh sure, sometimes it’s fun to peak at the stats but to consume yourself with it is just a tad bit over-the-top. But that’s just me and how I think of it.
People actually do leave comments on my blogs so I’ve never really personally had any issues with folks not showing me any blog love. If I don’t get any blog love for a time I don’t take it personally.
Here’s why people aren’t leaving comments on your blog
1. You have a subject line that doesn’t catch anyone’s attention
2. You don’t post follow-up comments on your own blog
3. You don’t come back and let people know how things turned out
4. The last time you posted anything was on May 1, 2006
5. You try to be overly proper with your grammar and punctuation
6. Your niche is so basic that it only attracts the people that are interested in that one subject
7. The colors on your blog are painful to look at
8. There is so much to look at that it’s too tiring to weed through all the stuff
9. You’ve just announced that you are going to do a 20 part series
10. You don’t make an effort to try and relate to other bloggers
11. You’ve spread yourself so thin that even your best blog buddy has to pray for you to snap out of it
12. You’re pissed off all the time
13. People don’t know about you yet because you’re new
Ok, so maybe I should have saved this post for Thursday 13 - tee hee!!
Hopefully that kind of gives you an idea as to why maybe people aren’t leaving you any blog love by way of comments. You have to put some effort into networking. It’s not going to just appear out of thin air. Nobody is going to do for you what you are not even willing to do for yourself. Why would we?

Hey, thanks for the link love!
I totaly agree being active within the blogging community is the best way to network. Especially if someone is new to the blogging scene I recommend going out there, browse the blog rings and POST COMMENTS on other peoples blogs, this really is the best way to “announce” the new blog, and of course post often.
It’s frustrating when people complain about their traffic yet they are unwilling “to get out there” and do anything about it. Nobody wants to work for their results. They want everybody else to do the work for them, ya know?
Good post! Nice corollary to the other ones about how to make bloggers hate you!
Oh believe me.. I have a lot MORE things that people do on their blogs that make me turn away before I’ve even read the first sentence. I didn’t even touch on some of the other pet peeves that I have.
The one thing that I HATE the most is when bloggers to the 20 part series OR try to spin some sort of number game. I HATE THAT with a passion.
I hate that so much that my brain never forgets who does those and I make it a point to never put them in my news reader again!!
LOL ..I’m guilty of #11. I have this awful habit of taking on more than I can chew.
Me too Deb!!
